A few images of the new Chinese-market long-wheelbase BMW 3 Series have made their way to the web. The vehicle's profile clearly shows a few extra inches of room for rear passengers, though the additional space between the front and rear wheels doesn't infringe too heavily on the sedan's design.
With a slightly longer rear door and expanded rear cabin, the BMW 335Li is designed for buyers who would rather be driven than drive. That's a big plus for the chauffeur-oriented Chinese luxury vehicle market. From what we hear, the vehicle is headed toward an official debut at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show in April.
In addition to more rear legroom, the BMW 335Li will likely feature a new 8.8-inch freestanding control display mounted atop the vehicle's dash. An auto start-stop system is expected to debut on the vehicle to help increase fuel economy, and a blind-spot awareness system is expected to be standard equipment, as well. Not surprisingly, the current generation has received little change for 2012, as all development is ongoing for the new car. The coupe, retractable hardtop convertible and sedan versions of the 328, 335 and M3 continue as they are with some package changes and the standard inclusion of Bluetooth. Gone for 2012, however, is the M3 sedan and turbodiesel engine option. A 328i Wagon remains the least expensive variant of the 3 Series. The M3 Convertible will receive a new $5000 Individual Composition Package option with four unique paint colors and interior trim choices to help make it more distinct.

BMW has revealed the all new 2012 3-Series F30 Sedan. This is the sixth generation of the world's best-selling premium saloon. The car will hit the market in February next year and it will build on the current model's position as the ultimate drivers car in its sector. It will also be the most logical business proposition, thanks to new powertrains and additional EfficientDynamics fuel-saving, emissions-reducing technologies.
BMW F30 is larger and more spacious than E90. It is also lighter and quicker, more fuel-efficient; and more nimble and agile while even safer. There have been big steps forward in style, quality, comfort and specification for only a minimal price increase. A wider choice of trim levels and an extensive personalisation programme will allow 3 Series Saloon buyers to order virtually a bespoke car.
F30 continues to be the ultimate driver's car by featuring rear-wheel-drive layout, near-perfect 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution, agile chassis set-up and responsive engines.
The engine range includes a new four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol unit with whopping 245PS and 350Nm of torque. This engine is installed in 328i and replaces the six-cylinder 3.0-litre engines in the previous 325i and 330i. 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and a staggering 44 mpg on combined cycle with CO2 emissions below 150g/km. The new unit features High-Precision Direct Injection, BMW's new TwinScroll turbocharging, Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC variable valve opening technology. The other petrol engine on offer is the 3.0-litre six-cylinder TwinPower Turbo unit in the 335i.
The diesels are an improved 2.0-litre in 320d with 184PS and 320d EfficientDynamics with 163PS, which is capable of doing 68.9mpg fuel consumption and just 109g/km CO2. Previously only available as a manual, the 320d EfficientDynamics is also now available with the new 8-speed automatic transmission.

Also new for 2011 are a pair of new models, the 335is coupe and convertible. For 2011, BMW has pulled the old switcharoo as the standard 335i gets a single turbo motor while the 2011 335is retains the older, bi-turbo engine.

Let's see, here we have one of the best-driving cars on the planet, with cargo room. Talk about a win-win. I didn't have a need to use the space behind the second row, but there's no question that everything that makes the BMW 3-series a great car is evident in this configuration: good power from the I6, steady suspension, precise steering, luxury appointments, rakish styling in a classic wagon configuration and solid build quality everywhere.
It's almost embarrassing to admit it, but my fixes for this car would center on comfort stuff: I'd like a better radio tuner and cupholders that give me confidence that they'll hold the cup through a 0-to-60-mph run.
This is a fine little wagon, although it seems you have to nearly squat to the ground to get in. Getting out is also a bit of a chore, and I hit my head on two separate occasions--and yes, I did duck.
Aside from that, this wagon was a good scooter for my overnight. I didn't make use of the cargo space, but it appears to be able to hold several bags or items. The seats were comfy enough, and there are nice materials throughout. But the 328i's steering felt heavy; the hubby even said it seemed as if we were towing something--and that was just on surface roads. For being a smaller wagon, it seemed heavy all around. But there was decent power for expressway driving and maneuvers, the car heated up quickly, and the seat heaters were much appreciated.
I would, though, do away with the silly pop-out cupholders. There has to be space somewhere for a real spot for your bottle of water or cup of coffee.

We bring you more spy photos of the 2012 3 series sedan (F30), in black and space gray, as BMW finishes the final evaluation phase testing on the next generation 3 series sedan.
Although the camouflage tape remains on these FEP level prototypes, we've already recently had a great uncovered look at the production F30 front and rear in a recent spotting at an F30 official photo shoot. But, these photos continue to give us views at the F30's overall size (expected to be just slightly larger than the E90) and its attractive proportions and stance. The black F30 test car also shows a new wheel style yet to be seen on an F30 prototype.
Signs are pointing to an F30 reveal sometime late October/early November at a London and/or Munich venue. The F30 will makes its world public debut at the 2012 Geneva show next March, go on sale in Europe shortly thereafter, and be available in the US beginning Spring 2012.

The BMW 3 Series is regarded as one of the most popular series of luxury cars on the road today. The 3 Series sedan is considered the luxury sedan of choice, year after year, in auto reviews. With a slight face lift and some engine modifications, the 2011 BMW 3 Series is now available for sale. Read on for the results of our road test of the new 3 Series sedan.
Performance
Like most auto manufacturers, BMW is aiming to make fuel economy and overall efficiency a priority, and the 2011 3 Series group is no different. In fact, BMW has a program called Efficient Dynamics that’s expected to be a leading part of the fuel-efficiency push in the auto industry. Thanks to that gas-sipping technology, the 2011 BMW 3 Series lineup now offers an N55 model that is more fuel-efficient and cleaner-burning than its predecessors. Other models should still achieve the 18/28 mpg city/highway rating of the 2010 model. The engine in the 328i remains the same for 2011, but places a single, twin-scroll turbocharger engine with 300 horsepower in the 335i model. All 3 Series models have 0-60 times of around five seconds. Handling and braking are solid, with a six-speed manual drivetrain standard and a six-speed auto optional.
Exterior and Interior Features
BMW made only a few cosmetic changes to the 3 Series for 2011. Auto reviews refer to the design changes as a “facelift.” The 2011 BMW is longer and slightly higher than the previous model. New exterior features include horizontal chrome blades, LED lighting in the front and the rear, a lifted back end, new bumpers, and new rocker panels and sideview mirrors. Inside, BMW has done very little with the cabin of the 2011 3 Series, which is a good thing considering how enamored car reviews are of it. The intimate, well-appointed cabin of the BMW 3 Series is a wonder to behold. The iDrive control system remains optional for 2011, and the steering-wheel shift paddles for models with automatic transmissions were redesigned for the new year.

The BMW M3 has grown cylinders over the years like a pubescent pre-teen grows in height. What started out with an inline-four then grew into a straight-six for two generations before packing a V8 into the current model. The next one is expected to set to drop a couple of combustion chambers and go back to a single bank, but don't think for one minute that'll mean a drop in performance.
According to the rumormongers at AutoExpress, the next-generation M3, due sometime around 2014 after the new 3 Series comes along, will pack – wait for it – a triple-turbo straight-six. The innovative arrangement will reportedly include two conventional spools powered off exhaust gases and a third electric turbocharger. Total output could be around 450 horsepower – a bump over the current V8 model's 414 hp – with even more carbon fiber bits than the CRT edition pictured above to help keep weight down.
Not exciting enough? BMW's M division has plenty more in the cards, potentially including an oft-rumored new M1 supercar and, once the 1 Series M Coupe is done its production run, a lightweight CSL version. An M version of the Z4 is also under consideration, but of course nothing final until the cars make their debuts.

BMW has released information on a pair of new special-edition 3 Series models available in Europe. The 2012 3 Series Exclusive Edition will offer buyers new 18-inch, lightweight V-Spoke wheels as well as a unique Mineral Grey exterior paint. Inside, the cabin is wrapped in Dakota leather in either Pearl Grey with contrast stitching or black. Bamboo grain anthracite wood trim adds a bit of specialness as well.
Of greater interest to enthusiasts is news that BMW will also offer customers a new 2012 3 Series M Sport Edition with a slightly sharper performance edge. BMW turned its M engineers lose on the vehicle's suspension and a host of exterior and interior tweaks help set both the coupe and convertible models apart from the rest of their pack.

Meet the new BMW M3 CRT. In this case, those letters do not mean cathode ray tube (think old-school computer monitors). According to BMW, CRT is short for Carbon Racing Technologies, and that's the kind of thing we can really get behind. That's especially true when the car being CRT-ized is the M3.
The BMW M3 CRT differs quite a bit from last year's M3 GTS, though both were conceived as lightweight versions of the E90-series car with more power, better brakes and upgraded suspension bits. For instance, unlike the GTS, the CRT comes fully loaded with navigation, a premium stereo system and is based on the four-door sedan with high-tech front and rear seats.
BMW is using the M3 CRT to debut its new carbon fiber production technique, which is used to good effect on both the front seats and a new hood that is as strong as a conventional steel unit with just one quarter the weight. More weight reduction comes from the titanium muffler, 19-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels and less sound deadening material. Even the brake calipers are made from a new lightweight compound.
A fresh set of adjustable coilovers work with a more rigid rear subframe and wide tires (245/35R19 front and 265/35R19 rear) to up the handling quotient. Power comes from a 4.4-liter version of BMW's well-known high-revving V8 engine, producing 450 horsepower (at 8,300 rpm) and 324 pound-feet of torque (at 3,750 rpm). Those ponies are routed to the rear wheels through the automaker's seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
Add it all up and you're left with a machine that's capable of terrorizing the race track every weekend while still serving as a perfectly lovely daily driver in between... one that can zip from 0 to 62 miles per hour in what we bet is a conservative 4.4 seconds. Want one? Get in line, as BMW only plans to build 67 units, each painted up in Frozen Polar Silver metallic with Melbourne Red accents and a black and orange interior. And there's no word on any of them making it Stateside, in case you were wondering.

It seems to be a winning formula for BMW, as the heavily marked-up and extremely limited volume (just 20-30 units each) car has now brought in a total of $3.9 million in revenue in just 34 minutes of sales time.
The latest addition to the Frozen range, the Frozen Black M3, sold out just 22 minutes after opening the books. That equates to one of the 20 cars selling every 66 seconds.
The Frozen Gray M3 sold 30 units in just 12 minutes, however, possibly indicating that the "murdered out" look really is nearing the post-shark landing ramp.

BMW has announced a new special edition M3, which will be available only in China.
2011 BMW M3 Carbon Edition will be limited to just 111 units, which will be sold at the biggest car market. The sports car features carbon fiber roof, BMW performance front GT splitters, hood inlets and a trunk mounted lip spoiler. Of course, all elements come in carbon fiber.
The special edition M3 is finished in white pearl metallic paint with black stripes. A Carbon Edition logo and huge 19” Style 220 M3 BMW wheels in matt black fitted with high performance tires complete the exterior look.
The interior received carbon fiber element, too. The “Carbon Edition” logo is present as well as white leather for the arm rest, door panels and center console. The final touch is the carbon fiber patterned material for the headrests.
The engine didn’t get any power boost, because it already has a lot of it – a 4.0 liter naturally aspirated hi revving V8 with 420PS and 400Nm of torque. It is mated to a Drivelogic 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) – electronically limited.
2011 BMW M3 Carbon Edition is priced at 1.23 million yuan, which is around $189 000.

The BMW 3-series coupe and convertible were just face lifted, but the Bavarians already are busy readying the next-generation 3er sedan; it’s that body style that always leads off a new 3-series generation. And so we expect in late 2011 or early 2012 to get an official glimpse of the four-door, which should arrive at dealerships here in late 2012 as a '13 model. Until then, these renderings provide a good idea of what to expect.
We like what’s here: The next 3 keeps the concave body-side surfaces, and the front and rear of the new car will be sharpened. This is very clearly the little brother of the new 5-series, but far more compact and more aggressive in its detailing. The front end is dominated by the four LED rings around the headlights, which will form the basis of the BMW face going forward, and the lower air intakes will become more angular. The rear view will allow you to tell how much power a particular 3-series is packing, even if the owner goes for the badge-delete option, as split exhaust pipes will remain the domain of the most powerful diesel and petrol versions.
Later in 2012, BMW will add a Sport Wagon, as well as the next two-door coupe and convertible models, the latter of which sadly will keep its folding hardtop. We’d have preferred a migration back to a cloth roof, if only to reduce weight. While the advantages of a folding hardtop are largely psychological, they are preferred by convertible-lovers without a garage or those that feel more secure in a car that’s wearing a helmet. In search of another market niche, BMW also will add a 3-series Gran Turismo in the spirit of the controversial 5-series GT.
What separates BMW from the rest of the pack is versatility. BMW models don’t fit just one look or standard. Some buy them for luxury. Others enjoy the sporty feel that’s made the name famous. Whatever the case, all Beemer drivers like to get expressive and that means going custom on the grille. The BMW 328 is a sports car manufactured by the German automaker between 1936 and 1940, which at the time was one of the most successful vehicles of its type in the world of motorsports. Part of the reason for its success was due to its many innovations and advanced features for its time, such as a tubular spaceframe and a hemispherical combustion chamber engine.
You may recall that just last year a recreated 328 Kamm Coupe celebrated the 70th anniversary of the car’s Mille Miglia victory in 1940. Now BMW is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the first 328.
Having started life as a racing car mid-way through 1936, series production of the road-going BMW 328 began in spring 1937. However, the high-performance sports car did not remain the preserve of race teams; while it was a fine racing machine, it was also equally as impressive in everyday use.
Agility, acceleration, reliability and lightweight construction were its main strengths. Indeed, at a time when powerful supercharged "Kompressor" machines ruled the racing roost, the BMW 328--weighing just 1,720 pounds and developing a modest 80 horsepower in series production form--was a genuine sensation.
Of the 464 examples of the BMW 328 ever built, only around 200 have survived, some 120 of which are still in Germany. Many still take part in historical races to this day, including many from BMW’s own classic car collection.

Good as it may be to drive, and better as it may be to ride in, we still don't quite understand the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo. It isn't as hunkered down and svelte as a Porsche Panamera or Audi A7 Sportback, and its big booty style isn't exactly the most attractive thing to come out of Munich.
And now there's a smaller one to look forward to.
In addition to a sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon, the next-generation BMW 3 Series will be offered in hunchbacked Gran Turismo form, seen here all covered up in swirly camouflage. Our sources indicate that the 3GT will have a different front fascia than the rest of the 3 Series lineup, as well as a unique roofline and a frameless window design.
Expect engine choices to be the same as the rest of the 3 Series lineup, with turbocharged four- and six-cylinder powerplants across the range. No word on when the 3GT will bow (or if it's destined for consumption here in the States, where the 5GT hasn't exactly been lighting the sales charts afire), but our spies suggest that BMW's new genre-bender will launch one year after the 3 Series Touring, another bodystyle we're not sure is coming to North America.

A new promotional video has been released by BMW, where the new 3-Series is being tested at the hottest place on Earth – Death Valley, California.

2012 BMW 3-Series will be a little bigger than the current model. It will offer a wide variety of engines including a new turbocharged 1.6 liter petrol with 150PS (110 kW), a new turbocharged 2.0 liter petrol with 245PS (180 kW) and a turbocharged 3.0 liter petrol with 306PS (225 kW). A hybrid version will also be available, which will have a petrol power plant paired to a 54PS (40 kW) electric motor.

BMW 3-Series GT To Be Called 4-Series? Call it whatever you like--the apple-bottomed sedan, the Quasimodo, the "Gran Turismo," the not-quite-a-hatchback four-door coupe-ish thing appears to be here to stay. In BMW's case, it may even spawn a whole new model line, if the latest rumors out of Germany prove correct. The car known so far as the 3-Series GT may bear a new badge: the 4-Series.
Rumors of a 4-Series coupe-like vehicle are not new--AutoBild produced some renderings of a two-door intended to look and behave like a smaller 6-Series way back in 2004. The evolution from 3-Series GT to 4-Series, however, is new, and as yet, completely unsubstantiated.
The car itself, however, is coming. CEO Norbert Reithofer revealed as much back in 2009, not long after the debut of the 5-Series GT. The release date then was planned for late 2011, though a 2013 launch now looks more likely.
Those of us in America can at least look forward to the GT version of BMW's mid-sized sedan--whatever it's eventually called--as an alternative to the 3-Series wagon, though if you ask us why anyone would choose the GT over the wagon, given the option, you're likely to be met with shrugged shoulders and a confused look. The questions as to whether the 3-Series GT/4-Series will replace the 3-Series wagon here, however, as the 5-Series GT has done, remains open.

The next-generation BMW 3 Series isn't that far off, with the sedan expected to debut sometime in 2011 as a 2012 model. Yet the Munich brand isn't sitting on its hands in the meantime – the current 3 Series coupe and convertible are getting a mild refresh and updated powerplants this spring for the 2011 model year. The most immediately noticeable change are headlamp clusters that get a subtle reshaping to go along with a wider grille and reworked lower front fascia. At the rear, the taillamps retain the same shape, but the reflectors are redesigned with some of the light-pipe styling found in other recent Bimmers.
The 3 Series coupe will now be offered with xDrive all-wheel drive, while the 3 Series convertible gets a new solar reflective leather upholstery that BMW claims helps keep seat temperatures down when the lid is open.
The most significant updates come underhood, where the much lauded twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six is being replaced by a new single turbo version. The revised engine, dubbed N55, has recently been launched in the 740i and the 535i Gran Turismo. The twin scroll turbo has dual exhaust inlets that allow the engineers to better balance the pulses coming in to spin up the turbine faster. This is expected to reduce the turbo lag that some drivers complained about with the outgoing twin turbo setup.
BMW also claims it has reduced cold-start emissions by routing all the exhaust gases through a single, larger catalytic converter that heats up faster. On the intake side, the throttle is eliminated thanks to the addition of BMW's Valvetronic variable valve control system. The N55 also gets direct fuel injection. The end result is the same 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque as before, but with a fatter torque curve that maintains its peak from 1,200-5,000 rpm.
Fourth generation models appeared for 1999 (sedan only) before the coupe, convertible, and wagon variants joined the party a year later. Designed with a more aerodynamic body shape, a stiffer suspension, and improved steering, the 3-Series was lauded right away by critics and drivers alike. Initially, 323i versions were given a 2.5L inline-six cylinder while a 2.8L inline six-cylinder was installed in the 328i. But by 2001, the 325i punched in with a 2.5L configuration rated at 184 horsepower. The biggest of the bunch was the 330i's 3.0L 225-hp motor. When the fifth generation debuted in 2006 as the E90, it was once again presented in two trims - 325i and 330i, just like the end of the previous generation. This time around, the 330i showed off 255 horsepower, an increase of 30 horsepower from the original output. 2007 saw the coupe become equipped with all-wheel drive but few other updates were to the 3-Series. In 2009, a 335d (diesel) version made its way into the fold and xDrive became the nomenclature used for all-wheel drive models.

While it’s been reported that BMW was working on a hybrid version of its popular 3-Series for the next-generation of the car, until now we haven’t had much tangible evidence to suggest those reports were in fact true.
That’s because we have some new spy shots of a prototype for the next-generation 3-Series but there are several clues that suggest this is a prototype for a new hybrid model. The hybrid giveaway are several “Rescue” stickers located on the doors and trunk-lid--stickers that we've seen before on prototypes for the upcoming ActiveHybrid 5 and original ActiveHybrid 7 and ActiveHybrid X6 models.
Expect the new hybrid 3-Series to also continue this naming practice, which means the car should carry the title ‘BMW ActiveHybrid 3’.
As for what’s lurking under the hood, it’s likely to be some variation of the six-cylinder and electric motor combo destined for the ActiveHybrid 5, perhaps with a little less power.
However, there’s a chance that we could see a new four-cylinder setup in the ActiveHybrid 3.
BMW’s latest hybrid technology connects the engine and electric motor with a dedicated clutch mechanism, allowing either to power the car, both in series and separately. To further aid fuel economy, regenerative braking, smart navigation software that takes topography into account when deciding how much hybrid juice to supply, and electronically powered accessories should all feature.
The new 2013
BMW 3-Series range is expected to bow in late next year. Expect the ActiveHybrid 3 to debut shortly after that.

This means the 3-Series has a powerful motor and a stiff suspension that some may find too brutal for daily, real-world driving. While this makes for a fun car at the track, the 3-Series has to compromise other luxury car elements, like a plush ride. Simply put, it is not as comfortable on the road as a Lexus ES.
If you’re shopping for a value buy, the 3-Series may exceed your budget if you like a lot of options. Pricing for a base 3-Series starts at $34,025, which seems relatively affordable, but once you start checking the options box, it becomes expensive quickly. Want AWD? That’ll cost you about $2,000, depending on the body style. Need an automatic? Cough up $1,375. Navigation adds on another $2,100. But, if you can stomach the price or don’t mind tapping into your kid’s college fund, the 3-Series is a car that reviewers find rewarding.
Other Cars to Consider. If you are looking for a comfortable luxury cruiser, the BMW 3-Series is not the right car for you. Along with the pics, BMW put out a brief statement (below the fold) confirming the X1's arrival in the U.S. sometime in 2011 and its plans to offer both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive (xDrive) versions, along with "a wide variety of gasoline and diesel powertrain choices." BMW won't officially confirm what mils will make the trip across the Atlantic, but the automaker says the X1 will use its EfficientDynamics system and that one gasoline engine and three diesels will be available when the X1 launches in Europe this fall. Due to the complicated way Alpina orders its cars from BMW - well, not ‘orders', ‘gets', because Alpinas are actually built on BMW's production line - it's impossible to spec BMW extras on an Alpina without paying a £1,500 ‘bespoke order charge'. Then you can specify to your heart's content, and many buyers do. But until now, the Alpina D3 Biturbo only came in one fairly basic 3-Series spec inside, with no nav. To get the nav, you had to pay for the system itself, and also pay that darned bespoke order charge. Which is why Alpina has introduced this ‘Lux' version of the D3, which includes nav, Bluetooth, climate control and black high-gloss trim, but with no extra fee attached.

As I said: complicated. But the message is this - at £33,950, £3,300 more than the standard D3, this Lux is the one to have. And this is one of the very best ‘real' cars in the world. Remember it has the superb twin-turbo diesel from the 123d under its bonnet, fettled by Alpina to 211bhp and 332lb ft. The standard 3-Series doesn't get that motor. A tremendous machine then - fast, efficient, good-looking, big enough for most people and now with kit. Comes as an estate and a saloon. For complete ‘best car in the real world' status, go for the wagon. Class. Luxury. Quality.

BMW 3-Series . BMW's foray into cutting-edge styling with former chief designer Chris Bangle's "flame surfacing" technique was a failure among both critics and consumers. The base and optional gasoline engines in the 2010 BMW 3-Series line are both 3.0-liter inline-sixes, following BMW's legendary history of smooth and inline-sixes. The base engine in the 328i produces 230 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque; it feels far more powerful than those numbers would indicate. The twin-turbo engine in the 335i, at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, offers turbine-like smoothness even during blistering acceleration.
The base 2010 BMW 328i model is hardly a slouch, sprinting from rest to 60 mph in just 6.2 seconds with the manual (6.8 seconds with the six-speed automatic). But that's to be expected. The pleasant surprise comes from its EPA ratings: 18 mpg city, 28 mpg highway with the manual (19/28 mpg with the auto). The 335i isn't notably quicker, doing 0-60 in 5.3 seconds with the manual or 5.5 seconds with the automatic. But the 300 lb-ft of torque produced by the quick-spooling twin-turbo setup means no waiting at all for copious power. It makes passing maneuvers just breathtaking, and its fuel efficiency ratings drop only to 17 mpg city, 26 mpg highway with either transmission.
Last year BMW launched its first-ever clean diesels for the U.S. market, one of them the 335d. The diesel model is available only as a four-door sedan with a limited range of options, but it maintains the BMW spirit in a very fuel-efficient package. The 265-horsepower twin-turbo diesel generates a locomotive-like 425 lb-ft of torque, thrusting it from 0 to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds, while the EPA rates it at 23 mpg city, 36 mpg highway. Spectators and even some drivers may never realize it's a diesel until it's time to fill up. All-wheel drive-which BMW calls xDrive-can be ordered with both gasoline engines and both transmissions. There are downsides, though: It is heavy, compromises some of the car's nimbleness, and cuts mileage considerably. It is only really practical in locations with frequent treacherous winter weather.

BMW3-Series. The new 3 receives the latest advancements in safety technology. A new Head Protection System is standard, protecting both front- and rear-seat occupants. Front-seat side airbags are standard; however, BMW is no longer offering side airbags for rear passengers.

The next-generation of BMW's Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is offered, as well as a number of new brake features.
Most unusual is the Brake Drying System. When the rain sensor (used for the automatic wipers) determines it is raining, the brake pads periodically move close to the rotors—just close enough to eliminate any film of water on the rotors without actually applying the brakes.
Another unique feature is the Brake Standby System, which moves the pads closer to the rotors when the accelerator gets released suddenly. This action is often followed by hard braking, so having the pads closer to the rotors allows the brakes to activate quicker in the event of an emergency stop.
On the Road (and Track).
The predecessor to the new 3-Series (the fourth generation) was a great car, and there are those who think it's the best 3-Series ever. Handling, power and comfort were all outstanding. But after spending a day in the new fifth-generation 3-Series, we were convinced that the best can get even better.
Our group of journalists drove on a wide variety of roads, from highway miles to twisting roads with less-than-ideal surfaces. We also spent a bit of time on the track at the new BeaveRun Motorsports complex in western Pennsylvania.

What impressives most about this car is its ability to handle all situations with aplomb.
On the highway, the new 3 accelerates strongly when needed, but is very comfortable and stable cruising at 75 mph. On winding roads it digs in and sticks to the pavement, even when the surface is less than ideal. The ride gets a bit bumpy, but never jarring. When many cars would skip across the road while cornering on uneven road surfaces, the new 3-Series just stays planted exactly where you expect it and goes exactly where you point it.
At the track this same car's limits are even more impressive. The 3-Series is extremely easy to control at high speeds, remaining stable even as the speedometer reaches triple digits.

One of the most noteworthy qualities about a BMW is the way it handles. Many sports sedans on the market sacrifice a comfortable ride to achieve better stability. The new 3-Series avoids this sacrifice, providing a smooth ride as well as impressive handling.

Improvements in the 3-Series that help make this happen include a new 5-link rear suspension, a double-pivot front suspension, a more rigid body and chassis, and extensive use of aluminum components to reduce unsprung weight.

The now-standard run-flat tires did not intrude on the driving experience, which says a lot. Typically run-flats can provide a harsh, uncomfortable ride, but the suspension in the new 3 works so well with run-flats that there is no detectable difference between them and standard pneumatic tires.

The engine-speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering system continues essentially unchanged; however, the new suspension and sub-frame have actually sharpened the new 3's reaction to steering inputs. Steering feels very precise, with good feedback from the road. BMW's Active Steering is available for the first time on the 3-Series. With Active Steering, the steering ratio varies depending on speed and steering input.
New Look Inside and Out. Although immediately recognizable as a BMW 3-Series, the new car is quite a change from the outgoing generation. However, the change is not as extreme as it was with the new-generation 5-Series—a styling statement that many BMW loyalists still have not readily accepted. The front of the 3 is much bolder, with larger headlights better integrated into the overall design. BMW's Xenon Adaptive Headlights (optional on the 325i, standard on the 330i) feature distinctive light rings integrated into the headlights, which actually swivel to illuminate in the direction the car is turning. No longer part of the hood, the grille of the 3-Series also increases in size. Chrome slats differentiate the 330 from the 325, which has black slats.
The side view features a crease that intersects the door handles, creating a line angling down towards the headlights. This runs parallel to the beltline (at the base of the windows), which flows from the taillights all the way forward to the front of the car, giving the 3-Series a crisp, angled style and a feeling of forward motion. At the rear, taillights have the familiar L-shape, with Adaptive Brake Lights lighting an additional segment under heavy braking.

The interior features a new steering wheel, instrument panel and seats. Following the latest trend, a pushbutton starts the car rather than a key. However, at least for the time being, the key must be in the ignition. Eventually, BMW will offer "Keyless Go," which will recognize the proximity of the key to activate the start button.

Sirius Satellite radio is now available on the 3-Series line, as is the widely known, but not widely accepted, I-Drive. BMW's unique interface system uses a single knob to access navigation, communication, entertainment and other car settings. Previous versions have been quite complicated, resulting in mixed reviews. Standard in the 7-Series and 5-Series, the new 3-Series will be the first to offer I-Drive as an option. It is part of the $2,000 Navigation System package, and BMW reps expect about eight to ten percent of buyers to opt for this feature.

Both the 325i and the 330i get fresh engines for 2006: a new-generation 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder. Designated N52, this smooth I6 has different output for the 325i and the 330i.

In the 325i, horsepower is rated at 215 (vs. 184 in the previous generation), while the top-of-the-line 330i makes 255 horsepower (vs. 225 in the previous generation). Torque also increases and the engine now redlines at 7000 rpm—500 rpm higher than before.

The engine block is hewn from an innovative magnesium/aluminum composite, reducing weight by 22 lbs. In addition, the N52 features BMW's Valvetronic variable valve lift. Valvetronic has been featured in BMW V8s and V12s, but this is its first use in a BMW 6-cylinder engine. Valvetronic provides quicker engine response, better fuel economy, more power and a wider torque curve.

Fuel economy ratings have not been announced; however, while driving the 330i we observed an impressive average fuel economy in the mid-20s while driving quite aggressively. Projections for freeway economy could safely be in the 30 mpg range.

Both the 325i and 330i come with a standard 6-speed manual transmission; a 6-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission is optional. A 6-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) will be available on the 330i later this year.
We didn't get a chance to try the automatic, but the 6-speed manual is very slick, with short shifts and smooth operation. BMW claims a 0-60 mph time of just 6.1 seconds, which may be conservative based on our driving experience. Surprisingly, cars equipped with the automatic transmission are only a few tenths slower.

Since that time the 3 has become the core of BMW's lineup with more than 10 million units sold worldwide (including the 2002), making it the company's most successful product.
In calendar 2002 BMW began redesigning its entire vehicle line, starting with the 7-Series that year and moving on to the 5-Series and 6-Series in 2004. For the 2006 model year, an all-new 3-Series rejoins the family with a new look, more powerful engines, more room and a host of improvements and added features.
Larger 3-Series:

The 2006 3-Series has grown in almost every dimension. The wheelbase increases by 1.4 inches, the overall length stretches 2.2 inches, and the car has widened 3 inches. This growth results in a slightly roomier cabin and an additional 1.3 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk.
Front seats are supportive, with side bolsters that fit snugly but not uncomfortably. Up front occupants find plenty of legroom; however, the center console does not have a lot of storage space. Cupholders are positioned in the dash, sliding out near the front passenger. The right-side cupholder has very sharp corners, which were discovered the hard way—without going into details, let's just say one journalist we know has a painful memory of a jammed knee.

Unfortunately the increased size did not add any legroom in the rear seat where it was needed. Thus it remains a bit cramped back there, especially if you have more than two rear passengers or have plans for a long drive. The bump up in trunk space mentioned earlier is largely due to new, standard run-flat tires, so the spare tire and jack have gone away.

Although the 3-Series has grown in size, its weight has remained almost the same as its predecessor. With an automatic transmission, the 325i bulks up by just 44 pounds, while the 330i gains 88 pounds. Weight distribution front to back is almost exactly 50/50.

The E90 is the currently available generation, which debuted as a sedan (E90) and wagon (E91) for the 2006 model year, coupe (E92) and cabriolet (E93) for the 2007 model year[citation needed]. It is completely re-engineered from the E46, including changes to engines, transmission, the passenger compartment, suspension technology, as well as the addition of a host of high-tech features and options. The coupé/cabriolet body is now its own design and no longer derived from the sedan (unlike its predecessors), and is slightly longer and narrower than its E90 counterpart. Major features include Comfort Access, bi-Xenon adaptive headlamps, Active Cruise Control, and Active Steering. The sedan and wagon received a mid-generational facelift for the 2009 model year which comprised changes to the grille, headlights, tailights and trunk. The coupe and cabriolet are expected to be refreshed in the 2011 model year.

Currently, four engine options are offered, two being part of the new 'N' series of BMW inline engines featuring a host of new technologies. Technological innovations such as lightweight magnesium/aluminum construction, electric water pump, Valvetronic (steplessly variable valve lift), and Double-VANOS steplessly variable valve timing contribute to produce a lighter and more powerful motor than its predecessor, but yield a 15% increase in fuel economy. The E90 also marks BMW's return to turbocharging with the introduction of the BMW 335. The N54 engine produces 306 PS (225 kW; 302 bhp) and 400 N·m (295 lb·ft) torque.

The E90 series also marks the return of —a retractable hardtop convertible, which last featured on BMW Individual models of the E36 M3. Sales of the E90 have been very strong in Britain. In 2007, a record total of more than 58,000 vehicles were sold and it was the seventh most popular car in Britain. Future models. The next full revision of the 3 Series is expected in for the 2012 model year, and will feature improved aerodynamics, lightweight materials and the option of smaller displacement engines. A hybrid version is still under consideration.

The Coupé starts at £27,845 for the 320i SE, rising to £52,730 for the full-fat and wonderful M3 (£32,905 to £56,740 for the Convertibles).

The current E90 BMW 3-series has only been on the market since 2005 but details about the next-gen model are already circulating with most agreeing that the next model will feature styling lifted from the Concept CS.

Due in 2012, the next BMW 3-series will be the first of a family of BMW cars with a more recognizable face derived from the original styling of the Shanghai concept.
With the new 3-series, designers will attempt to address criticisms of the current car’s awkward styling and lack of interior space. These renderings, compiled using information from sources close to the project show that the new car will have a pronounced kidney-grille with the air-intakes positioned on either side of the bumper just below the headlights.
New options for the 2012 3-series will include hybrid variants as well as the latest version of BMW’s Efficient Dynamics. The X-Drive AWD system is likely to gain favour thanks to a redesign of the system to reduce weight, which will only increase fuel consumption by 0.5L per 100km over RWD models.

Other features that may make it to production include night-vision devices, a heads-up display and radar safety systems.

The current E90 BMW 3-series has been on the market since 2005, so it's only fitting that details about the next-gen model are beginning to circulate. Most agree that the next model will feature styling lifted, at least in part, from the Concept CS, though also expect to see a healthy dose of the new corporate styling debuted on the latest 7-series.

Due in 2012, the next BMW 3-series will pay special attention to efficiency and it will achieve that goal through extensive use of BMW's EfficientDynamics technology. Low drag aerodynamics, smaller engines, and high-tech electronics will combine to make the next 3-series a step above the current car.
Aesthetically, designers will attempt to address criticisms of the current car's awkward styling and lack of interior space. The bonnet will likely sit much higher than on the current model to improve pedestrian safety, while the sides will be marked with a prominent character line and high beltline. Proportions will remain much the same as the current model but weight will be reduced thanks to the increased use of aluminum and other advanced materials in its construction.
A huge change for the 2012 car could be the addition of three-cylinder engines to the lineup, according to Autocar. Though these wouldn't likely be seen in the U.S. during the first half of the next 3-series model life, they could eventually make their way across the pond if fuel efficiency and emissions regulations continue to tighten past 2016.

With a single turbo and 1.5L of displacement - effectively half of the current twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine - the cars would be good for anywhere from 150-170hp and 150-220lb-ft of torque, with the gasoline models weighing in lower on the torque scale than the diesel models. Paired with an ultra-efficient 8-speed transmission and more efficient auxiliary systems such as heating and cooling, the next-gen 3-series is expected to deliver some seriously impressive economy. One of the new advanced EfficientDynamics technologies to make its way into the next 3-series will be a so-called 'air curtain'. Using a special series of ducts and vents, the system directs air in a manner such that it slips neatly over the wheels, which are normally an area of high turbulence, and therefore energy-sapping drag. In addition to making the car more efficient overall, BMW is looking to make the next 3-series less expensive to build and therefore to buy as it aims for larger volumes. Whether that will mean compromises in terms of total feature set or simply a lower-end range of models to entice entry-level luxury buyers is not clear, but pushing the 3-series so far down-market could step on the toes of the 1-series range and any future city cars coming from the Project i initiative.
Finally, as yet another measure to enhance efficiency while still delivering a BMW driving experience, expect to see the hybrid technology debuting on the X6 and 7-series to eventually make its way to the 3-series, albeit in somewhat reduced form. This technology will likely be especially targeted at U.S. buyers, since even by the car's mid-cycle revamp in 2016, there isn't likely to be widespread adoption of diesel-engined cars. Of course, all of these details are still speculative at this point, but it's clear that BMW is pushing its mainstream offerings in a more efficient direction while still trying to maintain their engaging, driver-focused character. It is a difficult balancing act, but one that enthusiasts will enjoy seeing played out over the years to come.
